A Walkabout is a spiritual journey commonly undergone by the Australian Aboriginal people and is something of a right of passage. They wander in the “bush” and imitate some of the heroic deeds of their ancestor’s. Webster uses the phrase an “interruption from regular work.”
I’m a photographer and one of the many victims of trying to commercialize my hobby. I want to make money as a photographer so I shoot weddings, models, product, events and just about everything else I can get paid for. This has been great for my career and honestly it’s been a lot of fun, but, I never want to lose the hobbyist passion.
This is why I’m starting a separate side of my photography and calling it “Shootabout.” I want it to be an “interruption from regular work” and a “spiritual journey” in which I can break away from the studios and the clients and get back to my roots. Shooting the world as I see it.
My primary goal is for myself. I want to ignite some of the creative fire I get when it’s just me and the camera, no deadlines, no goals, no clients. My secondary goal is to inspire you to do the same thing by sharing my progress, my revelations and of course, my pictures.
I want your feedback. Whether it’s constructive criticism, praise, or stories and pictures from you own “Shootabouts” feel free to comment or email me. Good luck, God Bless, and enjoy!

You go Arley, It looks like we’re on the same page of inspiration.
Thanks! I just got so burnt out on doing projects for other people I stopped taking pictures that were just for me. Now that I’m working it back into my routine I’m really falling in love all over again 🙂
Thank you for looking at my site. I am with you on finding the pure joy of photography. If I get inspired by my photography that lends itself to children’s books…then I write a book using my photography. This year I want to publish a real coffee table book using the writings that I have on my blog. http://www.boyerwrites.wordpress.com So we both have some goals for 2012. Keep in touch. I will look forward to hearing good things. Nancy
Wow, sounds like you have a pretty busy schedule coming up, best of luck
This looks fun. I like that idea of a walkabout or a shootabout. I guess I’d have to call my thing a “writeabout,” which makes it feel even more fun and exciting (and transformative).
🙂 It really is a lot of fun. I enjoy writing too, obviously. It’s fun to just take pictures, or write, without a goal. I think it’s therapeutic, or at least a great stress reliever.
what a great idea and i love what you called it…
Thanks! I had really liked the idea of it for a while before I did it. The blog just kind of happened after I decided for myself to start doing “shootabouts”
Great Blog!
Thanks! I appreciate is
A great idea! It’s awesome Arley, always good to break from our daily routines of work and give our minds some fresh places. I’ll have a link in my post to this page as a great example of walking photography,or as you call it ‘shootabout’.
Thanks Jeffrey! I really appreciate you linking me in to your post. I love your blog!
[…] Okay your internet provider is giving you horrible service as usual and you haven’t been near books in ages. Lucky for you I have a third suggestion. Go for a walk. Where? That depends on how far you want to go. A walk can also expand to driving and visiting new locations. Many times somewhere new can offer a broad range of subjects and ideas to shoot. Even if you have been to your neighborhood park a thousand times before life may offer something new and random that was not there before. As I have mentioned earlier, viewing pictures will help you spot and even increase your spotting speed for potential subjects. Soon after I published this post I received a comment by Arley suggesting I check out his blog because it was based on this idea of walking photography, but he calls it instead a shootabout. It’s a very good example of inspiration that can be found from one of these walks. Check it out here, Shootabout. […]
such inspiring work and story… ❤
Thanks for the compliment. I love your work and “The Date a Girl” piece too. So true, if only they were easier to come by 🙂
Great blog! Can’t wait to see the rest of your journey 🙂
Thank you! More to come soon! 🙂
Hello! Thanks for stopping by my blog and liking one of my posts!
I love the theme of your blog, as it resonates with what other artistic professionals I’ve known have said about the pros and cons of doing something you love for a living.
I look forward to check in on your journey when I can.
Cheers!
Thanks, it’s definitely a catch 22 but well worth it when you can use it properly 🙂
I totally get where you are coming from. Hence my 365! Can be really draining constantly shooting for other people!
I love all the 365 projects. I just don’t trust myself to make the time to shoot every day. I’m going to try to do one shootabout a week and upload the pictures throughout that week
Hello you! Some great photography going on here! I used to enter competitions with my photos, but grew weary of trying to compete with the professionals who join amateur sites. It’s hard to compete when you have a fairly simple 14mpx point and shoot and they have all the latest gadgets. So I understand your comments about “commercialism” and the like. Nowadays I also take photographs purely for my own and others’ enjoyment. Until I get “that shot” – which will blow someone away enough to pay good money for it. 😉
I definitely sympathize. Photography is one of the most competitive fields to make money in. Best of luck, let me know when you get that shot 🙂
Hello Arley – I noticed that you stopped-by my blog this morning. Thank you for visiting and letting me know you were there…as I now know you are here, too.
It looks like you have great idea going for your own blog…welcome to the ‘sphere.
I’m still a novice photographer with a nice new camera, nothing fancy or extreme…so I’ll have plenty to be inspired-by with visits to your blog.
Thank you again for the visit. Will see you around….
Scott
Thanks Scott I appreciate you stopping in
Thanks Arley for visiting CorneaCopea. Going to take some liesure time to meander through your own blog now. 🙂
Thanks Bill, I don’t have a lot of content up yet. I just launched on Tuesday and have been trying to get a lot up quick but it’s tough to do around a full time job and a busy personal schedule. I’m really enjoying it though.
Thanks for the follow Arley. I’ll look forward to all of your posts. I really like your shootabout concept.
No problem. I’m a sucker for a 365 blog. I wish I had the self control/time to do something like that. It really is a lot of fun. My hope is more people will start doing it soon and tell me about their experiences
Your idea for a Shootabout is really neat. How long has/will it go on for? I’ve seen a bunch of other 365 projects, but yours is different and really great. The day-to-day record might be off by a bit, but it seems like there’s much more meaning to what you find.
Hi! I actually just launched shootabout on Tuesday so this is day 5. My intention is to continue it indefinitely, especially with the response it’s getting right now. My goal is to spend a full day shooting every weekend and then write and upload the posts throughout the week. I would love to have daily content but my schedule doesn’t always permit that so I just do what I can for now. This is first and foremost for me, I’ve really gotten a lot of satisfaction from doing it so I’m just pumped other people like it too!
sounds like a great idea…have FUN!
Thanks! I am 🙂
I think this sounds really good, Arley. I’m going to put you on my google reader. I can’t wait to see what you do.
Thank You! I look forward to sharing my work with you soon 🙂
You might really enjoy Rudolf Vicek. He’s a doctor, I think, but does photography as a hobby if I’m not mistaken. He’s one of my favorite photographers. I hope this link works for you. https://plus.google.com/u/0/105637423694027427561/posts
I can’t find his blog address at the moment. If this doesn’t work, let me know.
Thanks for the recommendation! http://rudolfvlcek.wordpress.com/ is his wordpress
I like the idea of a shootabout. Photography as a spiritual journey. I have found that when I photograph with a sense of play and creativity with no thought about outcome or pleasing anyone, I do my best work. Good luck on your shootabout.
That’s exactly the purpose for this 🙂 thanks for stopping by 🙂
I like it, used to do it. Now I am a climate-change refugee, maybe I’ll document that experience.
I would love to hear more about your experiences. Where did you live and what happened?
Great to connect with another fan of shallow DoF! I’m looking forward to seeing more of your work. Thanks for stopping by! ~ Red
Definitely, I’ve got another shoot done that I’m going to upload today or tomorrow. I’m trying to work more landscapes and big shots but something about shallow DoF shots just gets me. I love drawing your attention to one unique detail and leave everything else to the imagination
That’s awesome!!! One should always have the chance to keep their passions ignited, and get out there for the love of it!
Definitely, this blog has really helped me do that in the short week it’s been up
Arley thanks for stopping by my blog and the like! I really like the idea of a shootabout. Sometimes we lose ourselves and our vision by taking images that others want. Great way to get my creativity and vision back. Which is why I began taking pictures in the first place! Look forward to seeing more of your posts!
Thanks Vickie, I’m glad you could identify. I’m working on a post with some images from friends and fellow bloggers, if you have anything that you think would fit with the theme of this blog feel free to shoot me an email with the picture, a link back to your blog so I can credit you, and a few sentences about the image. I’ll try to work it into an upcoming post 🙂
Thanks for the like Arley. I’ll be interested to see where your photographic journeys take you – geographically and spiritually.
Thanks!
You’re very insightful about the reason for this blog. Great to temper the drive for business results with a conscious consideration of your creative side.
Thanks for visiting my blog and reading an entry. Hope to see you there again.
Definitely, and thanks for returning the visit.
Thanks for liking my post! Can’t wait to see how your photographs progress.
You’re welcome, your blog has a lot of style. I’m enjoying it so far and I hope you enjoy mine too
Thanks for the visit to my blog. I’m looking forward to following your photographic journey…really like what you’ve done with your blog!
Thanks DB, I appreciate you stopping by too
I really like what you have decided to do with your blog. We all find it so easy to get so bogged down in life that we forget to live it. I look forward to see more of the places/things you find as you wander.
Thanks for the feedback, I hope to come through with lots of fresh content soon!
So many people think that making time for you is selfish – I believe its vitally important and not at all selfish!
Go for it!
Have fun!!
Thanks Bruce, you definitely have to set aside some me time every now and then. Whether your thing is photography, writing, games, whatever it is you need to do it to clear your head of all the stuff you do for everyone else. I appreciate you stoping in!
So true, the real horror would be if we woke up and didn’t want to take a photograph. I was up late last night ordering photos for a traditional style album, the ratios of which are often wrong for me and a walkabout would certainly help
I’m glad I left an impression. If you do start doing a shootabout now and then I hope you’ll let me share it with my followers
I like that name, shootabout and the tie-in to the Aboriginal roots.
Thanks, the idea of just breaking away and spending some time without specific goals has always really appealed to me, glad you stopped by
Like your concept here. Keep shooting! 🙂
Thanks Miles, glad you stopped in!
Shootabout is a great Idea! Thanks for liking my Dog Lovers post.
Thanks and no problem, I had a German Shepard for years and years, he was a very smart and faithful friend.

Great photos. Keen to see how your journey goes.
Thanks Steven, I’m looking forward to sharing my next shoot 🙂
This is a great idea, I think we’ve got a similar passion! Can’t wait to see how things progress throughout the year!
Thanks Aaron, if you’re interested I’m entertaining the idea of using some guest bloggers to share content. Email me if you’d like to know more arleyseth@gmail.com
Nice blog, nice work! Glad I stopped by!
Thanks Alex and me too 🙂
I’ll be watching 🙂
Thanks! I hope you enjoy it!
I love your photoblogs. Very inspiring. Thanks! Kudos! 😀
Glad you’ve enjoyed it. Hope to see you again!
Hi Arley – thanks so much for coming by Lorain365 and liking what you saw!
I’m looking forward to seeing more of what you find on your journey, too 🙂
So far, so good!

Thanks Lisa, I love exploring other blogs 🙂
Some really great photos! I admire your courage of pursuing your dream.
Thanks for stopping by my blog and I look forward to your next post.
Your welcome and thanks 🙂
Arley……I got to love it, a “shootabout”. Throw in an “exposure” or “shutter” quest and I think we could start a whole new age movement for photogs………..friends don’t let friends shoot jpegs….en theos….jim
Thanks for the high praise Jim. A “movement” would definitely be more than I dreamed, haha. I appreciate you stopping by
Thanks very much for your support with my Bruges in December pics, it’s much appreciated….
No problem. Glad you stopped by
Hi Arley! Thanks for stopping by and liking my post. 🙂 Nice article. Just as you said, my ‘shootabout’ is an interruption from the stress and pressure of my day job.
Glad you can identify with it.
Hi Arley
I echo Rodney comment above, although my day is not stressful I have taken to carrying a pocket compact camera around now, never know what one may find
That’s a great simple way to re-ignite your creative spark. Thanks for sharing!
Hey Arley,
Like many above, just a quick thanks for stopping by and liking my most recent post at the Big Stretch Photography Blog… You’ve summed up a very common ailment most photogs face at some point and tackled it head on, but with some common sense thrown in. While I love 365 projects, it can very easily become a job in itself, so “knowing your limit and staying within it”, is a great message to convey while helping others find inspiration.
Keep it up!
Thanks for stopping by and I’m glad you connected with the concept. And you caught me, I’m a habitual blog explorer 🙂

You have some really fantastic Black and White work. Glad you dropped in
Thank you for clicking ‘like’ on one of my posts too – that’s how I found your blog. You take amazing pictures!
Thanks Reggie, I love exploring all the blogs on here. There’s so much to see.
So true! When you take only photos of clients, you do tend to get burned out. IT is so important to take your photos for you and to have an outlet for your creativity at the end of the day :)!
Couldn’t agree with you more, thanks for stopping by
What a great idea. I’m looking forward to seeing your pictures. Thanks for liking my blog post.
No Problem, glad you stopped in
Great photos and blog! Thanks for dropping by our post earlier.
No Problem! I love exploring other blogs
This is exactly what my blog is all about as well…photos for fun …
Great stuff !
Thanks Stuart, I’m glad you stopped by
Thanks for liking my post.
I’m a ‘hobby photographer’ and agree with you entirely – never lose the love of taking pictures.
Dorinda (lakesideindia)
Thanks Dorinda, I’m glad you know what I mean. Glad you stopped by
Thanks for stopping by my blog, it led me here. What a great blog, and love the title “shootabout.” Inspires me to pick up my little digital and go out and about today to see what I can shoot! I’m currently lucky enough to be in an area that begs to be photographed, but remember being inspired by broken down old buildings while in Youngstown, Ohio. Guess beauty is in the eye, huh?
Or the lens of the beholder 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!
That’s exactly what my photography is all about. I take a lot of photos with intention as an assignment or which I know I’ll eventually use in one of my designs, but then I’ll photograph just about anything I see along the way that’s inspiring, and I love to share.
When did you begin this blog, and how did you find so many followers so quickly?
The blog has been up for a little over a week. I’m very active on wordpress. I spend several hours every day looking through other blogs on the main reading page. I’ve been able to find some amazing photographers and people there and when I comment, like and follow them, it brings some of them back here. If they like my content, they often follow me too. I’m not “trying” to get a lot of followers but I do like the exposure and hearing what people have to say. It’s a lot of help for me as I try to define what I want to be as a photographer and I hope the photos and notes I share can inspire others in some way too.
Hello Arley,
thank you for liking my sunset pictures! =) It’s very appreciated.
Take care and keep up the good work with your shootabout,
Andreas
Thanks Andreas, best wishes to you as well
Thanks for stopping by my blog and liking my photo! I love the idea of a “shootabout!” Very novel idea.
Thanks, I’m glad you like it
Nice idea. Like your shots, too! Thanks for visiting my blog and the likes.
Cheers!

Glad you stopped by, thanks
Inspiring and fun idea! Thank you for liking my blog post.
Thanks, I’m glad you like it 🙂
Sounds like our plans our the same. I have been able to pick-up a little here and there and it is hard to get into the market. I have been trying various areas of photography and have published one photo-book for friends whom I served with in the Stan and Iraq. Most of the proceeds go to wounded vets but it has started a little something for me. So good luck Arley and hope you make it. Currently I have to take on a full time job as a scaffolder to make ends meet. But it is all well and good just keep you eye on your goal.
Oh thanks for following me. Hope you will enjoy my work as I am sure I will enjoy yours.
Yamane
Yamane, I hope you’ll send me an email, I’d love to have you write a bit about your experiences and how they’ve influenced your photography. My email is arleyseth@gmail.com
Thanks for taking a look at my blog! I love the concept of yours and good luck on your journey. I’ve enjoyed looking through your pictures.
Thank you, I’m glad you’ve enjoyed it
This is a great idea! It’s refreshing to break away from the “business” part of it and get back to what made you want to make it a business in the first place. I look forward to seeing your journey 🙂
Thanks, I’m glad you stopped by and I look forward to sharing my journey 🙂
Interesting blog and thoughts! Thanks for your LIKE buttons on my blog! Ann
Thanks for stopping by Ann, and you’re welcome 🙂
Hi, Arley. So glad to discover your blog. Looks like you have some great things happening here. I’ll definitely be tuning in. All best wishes to you!
Thank you! I’m glad you think so. I look forward to seeing you around the site
Thank you for stopping by the Hudson today! The river always appreciates visitors. I have several followers who I think would be very interested in your Shootabout and so I will be linking to you in my post tomorrow.
Meanwhile, I would like to recommend one of your fellow Carolinians to you. She is a writer who occasionally shoots but I find her writing is in the true spirit of a walkabout and think you might enjoy her. Her name is Andra Watkins, her site is The Accidental Cootchie Mama,
Keep on shooting for yourself (I find it is the only thing that keeps me sane.)
Thank you so much. I appreciate the offer. You’re more than welcome to grab any picture on the blog to share with your reader’s as well. If you would be interested in writing a guest piece sometime you can email me, arleyseth@gmail.com I’m looking into Andra’s blog right now and I’m really enjoying it so far
Last September I headed out to shoot a scenic of a specific area for a customer. Got the shots I needed, then realized what an incredibly gorgeous autumn day it was – sparkly frost everywhere, blue skies, warmth building with mist on roadside ponds. I spent the next 4 hours having a ‘me’ day or a ‘shootabout’ in your terms. Fantastic feeling and am still doing it here and there. I have a friend who impulsively calls the night before and says ‘want to see if we can catch the sunrise’. Got a few nice ones out of that too. Good luck on your shootabouts!
Thanks for responding. It’s always exciting when you can take a shoot you’re doing for a client and turn it into a shoot you’re doing for yourself at the same time. Thanks for stopping by and I appreciate you sharing how you’ve had your own “shootabouts” too!
Hi Arley,
Thanks for dropping round at formosainsight.com. Glad you enjoyed some of the images there. I think having personal projects or a blog to spur us on is a great way to stimulate the creative juices and minimise rut time. That’s one of the reasons I started formosa insight. I’m bookmarking shootabout as I always find it good to be stimulated by (rather than copy) the creativity of others. Looking forward to dropping in and seeing more of what your up to from time to time. God bless
Andy

Thanks for stopping by my blog and ” liking” a post. I am enjoying learning all I can about this new hobby of mine! I’m finding lots of inspiration on your blog…in the photos and the thought processes involved. I look forward to following your journey.
Thanks, I’m glad you stopped by
Way to go. In some ways, I’m your opposite. I’m just a hobbyist who would like to get paid. LOL
For four years I took photographs for a newspaper. I really enjoyed that, getting out and meeting people. I loved to take photos of people just doing stuff. That was fun.
But since I’ve been driving all night for a living, living in a dump, I don’t get out much any more. Still, because of this weekly photo challenge, I’ve been encouraged to at least photograph what’s all around me. That’s been really cool.
I’ll be watching you, and thanks for stopping by and liking my “Weekly Photo Challenge: Simple (Old Barn)” at https://fstopfantasy.wordpress.com/
I have a lot of respect for you sticking it out with your passion even when it’s tough otherwise. I appreciate your candor and hope you’re able to breathe enough life into your photography that it puts you back in a place to make money from it again. God Bless and thanks for the comment!
I love the idea behind your blog, very cool. Will certainly bookmark / follow!
Thanks Steve, I appreciate that
What a brilliant idea….. it’s a great thing to do.
Thanks, I’m glad you liked it
Beautiful shots and a really great blog. Thanks too for stopping past mine (yesnobananas) – as a newbie it’s very much appreciated
Alexa
Thanks, glad you enjoyed
You’re just feeling what all people with artistic talent feel. The persistent “itch” that needs to be scratched, you need to create, exercise your creative mind, follow mind and heart. Wonderful things might happen!
I wish you find the right path to find what you are urged to seek! 🙂
Thanks for your visit to my blog!
Thank You, you’re right, it’s all about the journey
Thanks for liking my photos! I like the description of your blog. I don’t sell any of my photos (Yet? Who knows what might happen, but it’s not my intention anyway.), but I can imagine that it can create a longing to get back to your roots and take pictures without any specific goals in mind. I can think of few things that would be more relaxing than walking around with your camera and taking all the time in the world to focus on the beauty of your surroundings. Keep blogging!
Thanks for stopping by, I appreciate the kind words and I’m glad that you could identify with the post
This is what I do and you gave it a great name! I’m not a professional to take a break from typyical photography settings, but mine is a break from my everyday work ( which happens to be unpaid)!
I know what you mean, In addition to photography and this blog I work a 9-5 desk job. I’m definitely ready to take pictures by the time I get out of there.
Once in a while someone comes along….someone who shares the same passion and interest as you…..thanks for dropping by. I’m thrilled that someone is reading my blog. Your blog is very interesting. I haven’t read all your contents yet, but I am already liking what I am just beginning to see. May the Force be with you for always!
Haha, I’m glad you’re enjoying the blog, fantastic work on your blog and keep up the good work, there is no try
Arley,
Thanks for checking out my blog. I like your blog and photos, the inspiration that your local surroundings provide. I love that idea. We can overlook so many wonderful photo opportunities right in our house or back yard while we’re in search of that faraway, wonderful land.
Well said, thanks for stopping by
Arley, You are so right on about what your purpose is! That is what will keep your fire burning! You have to take care of yourself first and you’ll be a more creative agent for it! Your clients will love it! Wish you the best.
Thanks Maria, I’m glad you support what I’m doing here. Thanks for stopping by and God Bless!
Arley, THANKS for visiting my “punny” photoblog and leaving a “like.” I have browsed through your photos, and they are exceptional, especially the macros.

Thanks John, I’m glad you’ve enjoyed my work
Your site was recommended to me by rutheh.wordpress.com and I love your message and your photography. Looking forward to seeing more,
Thanks, I’m glad to see you here and it’s great to hear when other bloggers are talking about me 🙂
Thanks for liking my post! I just checked out your blog…love your photos – they are so cool!
In Christ,
Lexie N.
Thanks Lexie, I’m glad you’ve enjoyed the blog
Thanks for liking my post.
No problem!
I shoot for fun regularly I think it’s so important for my own creative development. I’ll also never stop doing training, workshops and unpaid collaborative shoots for the same reason. It’s so important to do stuff just for you.
Thanks for dropping in Babb, glad you agree 🙂
Arley ~ I really love your idea. I got so burned out practicing law, that I took several all summer “shootabouts” a few years back. Of course, I didn’t walk from California to Alaska. I did take those trips on the famous American bike, 96arley 96og! 😉 Sure hope to do one of those in your wonderful country soon, but have no idea how I would get my 96arley over there. And, I like your photography very much! Inspirational! Will be following you site to gather more creative nourishment. Best regards.
Haha, sounds like a lot of fun. If I ever find myself in need of a riding partner (or a lawyer!) I’ll give you a call 🙂
Thanks for the visit! I think what you’re doing with this blog is a great idea and something very important to do – to keep the fountain of creativity bubbling forth. I completely understand your thinking about this – when I think of something as work, it does lose a bit of the magic. Still enjoyable, but the nature of professionalism introduces deadlines and other constraints that can, sometimes, damper the passion of the endeavor.
Well said William, thanks for stopping by
Thanks for liking my post.
Making art as a response to the world as you see it, rather than for the clients is so much more satisfying.
I also have this wandering habit, crucial to re energize and just to practice seeing again.
Your photos are beautiful.
It’s always nice to find others who enjoy breaking away from the norm with their creative muses

Thanks Tom, it’s great to have you
What a fantastic concept. I hope it is going well. Important to make time for ourselves and it is good you recognize how important it is to you. Be well.
Thank You, I’m glad you stopped by
Enjoy your journey, I think it may fuel your soul.
Be well.

Thanks Jess, it has certainly rekindled my spirit for adventure 🙂
Thank you for leaving a Like on my blog, Arley. Besides making me feel gook it led me to your blog, which I’ve enjoyed. I also appreciate what you say in “What Shootabout Is All About.”
Thanks, I’m glad you’ve enjoyed it 🙂
I like your eye for detail. It is as sharp as your camera lens.
Ha, thanks Joseph!
i too do not like turning myn hobbies into money as eventually it stops being a hobby but more of a chore and its spoiled…………….
I agree, we have to be careful the way we do it. It’s possible to make money doing what you love but once you compromise the way you do it that’s when you’re in the danger zone. Thanks for stopping by
Thanks a lot for your support on Mausoleum @ Kensal Green Cemetery….
You’re welcome…
Thanks for stopping by my blog.
I can’t say photography is my main hobby, but it’s integrated into almost everything I do, and it will continue to be an important part of my “off time”.
As such, I’m always interested in seeing other people’s photography efforts as an inspiration to what I can shoot for. To that end, this is a great place to stop by, and since it’s relatively new I look forward to taking part in watching it grow.
While photography is certainly my main hobby, my other muse is reading what others believe and have to say. I’ve enjoyed your about section and look forward to your commentary on your life. I fall in line with many of your opinions (aside from spirituality) and am certainly of the accord that we as people, regardless of race, religion, orientation, ethnic background, culture or political affiliation, have no right to impose our own beliefs and personal decisions upon another who’s actions do not impose upon our own rights. Thanks for visiting and commenting!
Thanks for finding my blog, especially as it means I have found yours.
Haha, you’re welcome, great to see you stopped by
Thanks for liking my musicians post.
No problem, when I’m not in the blogosphere doing shootabouts, working with musicians is actually one of my favorite assignments. I did live show pictures for Edge of Eternity, Addison Croft, and Kutless last year and it’s tons of fun
your blog really inspires, and moves emotions… now i understood what you mean, shooting for commercial purposes, i’ve forgotten what it was like to shoot only for myself. by accident, i’ve started shooting without commercial purpose –only for me, and it’s amazing… 🙂
i cannot tell you how much i love your Bokeh shots. 😀
Thank you for your generous praise. I’m very pleased to hear you going back to shooting for yourself. Enjoy every minute and thank you so much for visiting!
Thank you for taking the time to read my recent post “The appeal of surreal photography” – I’m delighted you liked it! And now I’m off to browse your blog… 🙂
Thanks Susie, hope you enjoy your time here!
Your level of expertise is out of reach. Great Photography Blog you have here.
I appreciate the high praise but I firmly believe everything I’ve learned can be learned.
Thank you for viewing my posts. I will be appreciate if you could leave me your comment. I like the first picture of your “What Shoot about is All About”. The sun is hope. The thorn is life. This is my interpretation.
Hello dear, you are loved, congratulations! I nominated you for the Liebster Blog Award, check it out here:

Enjoy and have fun 🙂
Hello Arley,
thank you for your interest in our straw bale hotel.
We wish you all the best for this year 2012 and a lot of success with your blog.
Greetings from Switzerland
Louis
Trying to “go pro” almost cured me of photography! I gave it up and after a long break, I found my way back again. I love doing it for love, I hated doing it for clients! Maybe you’ve found the perfect compromise.
I certainly hope so, it has worked well for me thus far but my secret hope is one day somehow the blog could pay the bills and I could really pour myself into it. As it stands now I don’t get to go out on ShootAbouts near as much as I would prefer
Hello Arley from cold West Wales, Uk,
Found your site after you found mine…..don’t know how, but it looks a great blog- both images and texts. And I like the background to why you’re doing it….. as an ex veterinary surgeon, I’m discovering creativity far too late in my life, and trying to share this and our love of the natural world through stories from rural Carmarthenshire. Nice to ‘meet’ you, and look forward to your future posts, Julian
Thanks for stopping by, I spend a lot of time in the photography blog feed, I’ve found some amazing blogs out there and you were one of the ones I stumbled upon. Keep up the great work on your blog. I’m fortunate to have an early start on photography but you have a great array of images, keep up the good work and best of luck! (Always love hearing from the UK, I spent a week in Wales as a young man, a beautiful part of the world. Would love to take another trip for photography.)
Thanks for liking my wintertime post.
You’re welcome Rich, keep up the great work
Thank you for visiting my page and I look forward to perusing your pictures!
Thank you, I hope you enjoy what you see!
Blog looks Great ! Amazing photography ! wow :))
Thanks, glad you like it!
That’s a great idea to go on a spiritual journey like that. I was also a reporter and had to quit because writing just wasn’t fun anymore that way so I know what you mean. It felt like factory writing. Good luck on your spiritual journey -it looks like a great one so far!
Thanks, it’s so interesting to hear from people with different photography backgrounds, thanks for stopping by
Thanks for visiting my blog and for the like! I need to take more photos as I go about my daily activities and see what inspires me and unfolds… Some of the best advice I was given by a professional photographer was to always have a camera with you, no matter what, because you’ll always, always regret the shot that got away. Just subscribed, looking forward to seeing more of your pics.
Thanks, that’s some great advice! I almost always have my camera with me in my car and I occasionally resort to my cell phone.
Thanks for liking my museum portrait post!
Keep it up great work.
Thanks, I appreciate you stopping by!
First, let me thank you for the like. Second, I can completely relate to this post. I started doing some freelance work. Those jobs are not nearly as fun just “winging it”. Writing and photographing what I want, when I want. Good luck on your journey!
Thank You, it’s always encouraging to hear from someone who feels the same way I do! 🙂
Thanks for your like Arley! Shootabout is such a good name for what you are doing and I can relate to the concept of only picking up the camera for work! We look forward to cheerin’ you on with your journey, and future shootabouts! Stop buy and see us everynow and then won’t you!
I’ll have to do that and thank you for your encouragement
Thanks for liking my On Assignment with Musicians post.
Thanks so much for stopping by “Eyes of the Mountain”.
You’re definitely doing some great work. Have a wonderful time on your continued journey.
Thanks for the words of encouragement!
WOW! Your “Shootabout” explanation really hit home with me. Your insights resonate with me and reminded me of a post I recently read that addresses this issue of separating your passion from your work, http://lkayjohnson.wordpress.com/2012/02/19/do-what-you-love-or-maybe-not/. “…is there wisdom in hiding a little piece of your creative soul away from your paycheck?” I so appreciate the perspective you bring to this ongoing dilemma for us artistic types that struggle with whether we should market our passions.
Thank you so much for that link, I enjoyed the post. I struggled for a long time to find the balance but I think I’ve got it now, this blog and the community have really been amazing!
“I’m a photographer and one of the many victims of trying to commercialize my hobby.”
lol, awesome! ^.^
And the first photo is gooorgeous 🙂
Thanks, that’s probably my favorite line on the whole blog 🙂
Wow, thanks for visiting my blog and I think your post is great! I think your “shootabout” is a beautiful idea. Even more rewarding for you would be keeping your photography experiences spiritual in nature while you are on your quest. You’ll be rewarded with deeply profound spiritual occurrences that may totally delight your photography!
Good luck. I am not a photographer. God gives me these photos because I choose to stay connected to Him in faith.
Hi Cindy, thanks for the comment, I do believe God should be the center of everything we do. It’s worked out pretty well for me and I hope He will take pleasure in what I share and say as much as the many bloggers who choose to follow me
Thanks for visiting my blog. I’m enjoying looking at your pictures!

Thank you for liking my post! You have a great blog!
If you’re interested in a “dark” story about a photographer, you won’t be disappointed. Just don’t try thinking too hard about why any of it happens.
Photography..my secret love 🙂

Thanks for stopping by my blog. I love the idea of a shoot about; can’t wait to see what you shoot next!
Thanks, I appreciate you returning the favor. I’ll try not to keep you waiting! 🙂
looks like a fun site Arley! I like the walkabout / shootabout concept. I was recently at a local fairgrounds (mostly closed for the season) on a light rainy day and had lots of fun shooting without anyone else around! Will be posting these on my blog soon: blog.glennweissel.com
Stay tuned!
I’ll be looking forward to seeing them, thanks for stopping by, glad you liked the concept.
Life is a journey and you are on a huge adventure right now by taking a risk to step out on your own. Keep your passion moving forward each day I look forward to where life takes you. GOD bless you and your family two and four-legged!

Thank you so much for coming by my blog and liking my post. I love what you wrote here. Although I’m not a professional photographer, I understand what you’re saying here as far as other areas of my life where I’ve felt the same way. Your photos are really amazing. I love different perspectives and you capture these perspectives I never would have thought of. It challenges me as I am trying to develop my skills. Thanks. I look forward to following your posts. 😀
Thanks for the kind words! I appreciate you visiting
Shoot-abouts! LOL! I should have thought of that, since I’ve got walk-abouts on my blog. Great pics and training posts! Thanks for the like on my blogpost.

Thanks for liking my post Hollywood – Here I Come!
I love shooting just for the sake of shooting, and I applaud you for taking the time for doing that for yourself, outside of work! Because that is where the essence is, right? The passion? This is awesome, I look forward to seeing more!! – Cheers!

Thanks, I appreciate it!
Heyy thanks for visiting my blog and liking my last post…I’m not very regular with the blog so excuse me for my late response…It sure is a great idea to shoot for yourself as Ive experienced the same thing from the time I started out as professional photographer/writer I hardly go out to just click like I used to…I’m inspired n will now try n take out time for ME photography…All the best n I will be following to brush up my skills…your tips are great!!
I’m glad you’re picking up something from me. I’ve found I’ve pushed my own photography limits more blogging than I ever did for a client. Money is a poor motivator compared to passion 🙂

Thanks, I’m glad you like it!
