A Walkabout is a spiritual journey commonly undergone by the Australian Aboriginal people and is something of a right of passage. They wander in the “bush” and imitate some of the heroic deeds of their ancestor’s. Webster uses the phrase an “interruption from regular work.”
I’m a photographer and one of the many victims of trying to commercialize my hobby. I want to make money as a photographer so I shoot weddings, models, product, events and just about everything else I can get paid for. This has been great for my career and honestly it’s been a lot of fun, but, I never want to lose the hobbyist passion.
This is why I’m starting a separate side of my photography and calling it “Shootabout.” I want it to be an “interruption from regular work” and a “spiritual journey” in which I can break away from the studios and the clients and get back to my roots. Shooting the world as I see it.
My primary goal is for myself. I want to ignite some of the creative fire I get when it’s just me and the camera, no deadlines, no goals, no clients. My secondary goal is to inspire you to do the same thing by sharing my progress, my revelations and of course, my pictures.

This looks fun. I like that idea of a walkabout or a shootabout. I guess I’d have to call my thing a “writeabout,” which makes it feel even more fun and exciting (and transformative).
🙂 It really is a lot of fun. I enjoy writing too, obviously. It’s fun to just take pictures, or write, without a goal. I think it’s therapeutic, or at least a great stress reliever.

I love all the 365 projects. I just don’t trust myself to make the time to shoot every day. I’m going to try to do one shootabout a week and upload the pictures throughout that week
Hello you! Some great photography going on here! I used to enter competitions with my photos, but grew weary of trying to compete with the professionals who join amateur sites. It’s hard to compete when you have a fairly simple 14mpx point and shoot and they have all the latest gadgets. So I understand your comments about “commercialism” and the like. Nowadays I also take photographs purely for my own and others’ enjoyment. Until I get “that shot” – which will blow someone away enough to pay good money for it. 😉
I definitely sympathize. Photography is one of the most competitive fields to make money in. Best of luck, let me know when you get that shot 🙂

Your idea for a Shootabout is really neat. How long has/will it go on for? I’ve seen a bunch of other 365 projects, but yours is different and really great. The day-to-day record might be off by a bit, but it seems like there’s much more meaning to what you find.
Hi! I actually just launched shootabout on Tuesday so this is day 5. My intention is to continue it indefinitely, especially with the response it’s getting right now. My goal is to spend a full day shooting every weekend and then write and upload the posts throughout the week. I would love to have daily content but my schedule doesn’t always permit that so I just do what I can for now. This is first and foremost for me, I’ve really gotten a lot of satisfaction from doing it so I’m just pumped other people like it too!

I like the idea of a shootabout. Photography as a spiritual journey. I have found that when I photograph with a sense of play and creativity with no thought about outcome or pleasing anyone, I do my best work. Good luck on your shootabout.

Definitely, I’ve got another shoot done that I’m going to upload today or tomorrow. I’m trying to work more landscapes and big shots but something about shallow DoF shots just gets me. I love drawing your attention to one unique detail and leave everything else to the imagination

So true,the real horror would be if we woke up and didn’t want to take a photograph. I was up late last night ordering photos for a traditional style album, the ratios of which are often wrong for me and a walkabout would certainly help

That’s exactly what my photography is all about. I take a lot of photos with intention as an assignment or which I know I’ll eventually use in one of my designs, but then I’ll photograph just about anything I see along the way that’s inspiring, and I love to share.
When did you begin this blog, and how did you find so many followers so quickly?
The blog has been up for a little over a week. I’m very active on wordpress. I spend several hours every day looking through other blogs on the main reading page. I’ve been able to find some amazing photographers and people there and when I comment, like and follow them, it brings some of them back here. If they like my content, they often follow me too. I’m not “trying” to get a lot of followers but I do like the exposure and hearing what people have to say. It’s a lot of help for me as I try to define what I want to be as a photographer and I hope the photos and notes I share can inspire others in some way too.

Sounds like our plans our the same. I have been able to pick-up a little here and there and it is hard to get into the market. I have been trying various areas of photography and have published one photo-book for friends whom I served with in the Stan and Iraq. Most of the proceeds go to wounded vets but it has started a little something for me. So good luck Arley and hope you make it. Currently I have to take on a full time job as a scaffolder to make ends meet. But it is all well and good just keep you eye on your goal.

Last September I headed out to shoot a scenic of a specific area for a customer. Got the shots I needed, then realized what an incredibly gorgeous autumn day it was – sparkly frost everywhere, blue skies, warmth building with mist on roadside ponds. I spent the next 4 hours having a ‘me’ day or a ‘shootabout’ in your terms. Fantastic feeling and am still doing it here and there. I have a friend who impulsively calls the night before and says ‘want to see if we can catch the sunrise’. Got a few nice ones out of that too. Good luck on your shootabouts!

Way to go. In some ways, I’m your opposite. I’m just a hobbyist who would like to get paid. LOL
For four years I took photographs for a newspaper. I really enjoyed that, getting out and meeting people. I loved to take photos of people just doing stuff. That was fun.
But since I’ve been driving all night for a living, living in a dump, I don’t get out much any more. Still, because of this weekly photo challenge, I’ve been encouraged to at least photograph what’s all around me. That’s been really cool.

i too do not like turning myn hobbies into money as eventually it stops being a hobby but more of a chore and its spoiled…………….
I agree, we have to be careful the way we do it. It’s possible to make money doing what you love but once you compromise the way you do it that’s when you’re in the danger zone. Thanks for stopping by

I can’t say photography is my main hobby, but it’s integrated into almost everything I do, and it will continue to be an important part of my “off time”.
As such, I’m always interested in seeing other people’s photography efforts as an inspiration to what I can shoot for. To that end, this is a great place to stop by, and since it’s relatively new I look forward to taking part in watching it grow.
While photography is certainly my main hobby, my other muse is reading what others believe and have to say. I’ve enjoyed your about section and look forward to your commentary on your life. I fall in line with many of your opinions (aside from spirituality) and am certainly of the accord that we as people, regardless of race, religion, orientation, ethnic background, culture or political affiliation, have no right to impose our own beliefs and personal decisions upon another who’s actions do not impose upon our own rights. No problem, when I’m not in the blogosphere doing shootabouts, working with musicians is actually one of my favorite assignments. I did live show pictures for Edge of Eternity, Addison Croft, and Kutless last year and it’s tons of fun
your blog really inspires, and moves emotions… now i understood what you mean, shooting for commercial purposes, i’ve forgotten what it was like to shoot only for myself. by accident, i’ve started shooting without commercial purpose –only for me, and it’s amazing… 🙂

Trying to “go pro” almost cured me of photography! I gave it up and after a long break, I found my way back again. I love doing it for love, I hated doing it for clients! Maybe you’ve found the perfect compromise.
I certainly hope so, it has worked well for me thus far but my secret hope is one day somehow the blog could pay the bills and I could really pour myself into it. As it stands now I don’t get to go out on ShootAbouts near as much as I would prefer

I need to take more photos as I go about my daily activities and see what inspires me and unfolds… Some of the best advice I was given by a professional photographer was to always have a camera with you, no matter what, because you’ll always, always regret the shot that got away. WOW! Your “Shootabout” explanation really hit home with me.
