It’s good to learn from your mistakes and I must admit I made a rookie mistake in all of today’s pictures. Its not backlighting the subject, which is quite intentional, or having huge sun spots, also intentional. It’s just a careless rookie mistake and you can see it in every one of today’s pictures… Wanna know what it is? Keep reading ๐
I have a leave no trace photography policy that I did break a little bit in today’s shoot. By broke I mean I literally bork a small piece of a branch so I could shoot the sunlight through it. I stumbled upon this tree near the mall where I did the last shootabout. The location was pretty simple but I really wanted to play around with some more sun in the background work. I think it came out well except for one little thing…
I love the bean-pod in the picture but I also love the stick it’s on. The wood is all gnarled and knobby and I really like it. Makes for a little extra interesting texture. The sun flare was really cool here too. I don’t get how the sun can have those little rays covering up part of the bean pod when it’s on the other side of it. I might have to Google that one day. I thought about cropping this image but that would cover up my rookie mistake so I decided I wouldn’t… Anybody figure it out yet?
Yes, I did basically just set up the first shot with the second shot in the background. ๐ Both of these work really well by themselves but when you take something cool and put it as a background of something else cool, it makes them both look even better. Like putting Chuck Norris in a Bruce Lee movie or putting whip cream on Hot Chocolate.
You know I like to do this ๐ check out my friend Sally over atย Lens and Pens
Also, check out the Facebook and Twitter in the Sidebar.
Figure it out yet? The amateur mistake is I forgot to clean my equipment before I started shooting. Invest in some simple field cleaningย toldย and use them, it will save you from a random spec showing up in the same place in every picture. It’s an easy fix in Photoshop but I wanted to share my mistake so you could learn from it. ๐ Have a great week-start (as opposed to weekend) and God Bless, leave comments and email me if you’d like, arleyseth@gmail.com
If you have any interest in buying a cleaning kit, which I highly recommend you get if you don’t have one, here’s a good one made by Nikon. If you use this link you’ll also be helping support the blog so I appreciate that! –> Cleaning Kit on Amazon
That third shot is awesome.
Thanks! My favorite too ๐
My laptop screen is so dirty from my granddaughter’s sticky fingers that I didn’t notice your spots. Nice play with light. ๐
Haha, thanks!
I love photos like this, with the sun streaking from behind. great shots, even it those nasty specks are there.. tsk tsk.. LOL
๐ hehe, glad you (still) liked them
This is funny — but I kept trying to dust the specks from my computer! ๐ I’m glad it was on your end! I love the sunlight beaming pics!
God Bless You!
Dei
LOL, glad you liked them
I didn’t notice the spots. What I did notice was great composition and some honest, straightforward writing. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed it all ๐
nicely done!
Thanks Gail!
hah! I thought the spots were on my computer as well! Great shots, and great advice. The third one is my favorite as well. I try to use photoshop as little as possible, but since I scan negatives, it’s pretty much a necessity. I just ordered that cleaning kit you linked to. Can’t hurt to have a little extra help. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, so you still shoot film? That’s really cool ๐
Speaking of cleaning the lens, the other day I went out to shoot, accompanied by one of our cats. He rolled in the dirt and came up looking dusty brown instead of black. Every time I saw a cool shot and got down on my stomach to shoot it, the cat rubbed up against my lens and the static attracted a golden coat of dust over the whole lens! For once I had remembered a cleaning cloth, but there were no quick shots that day.
Cats definitely love expensive equipment, good thing you had your cleaning cloth. ๐
Good lesson.
Thanks Victor, it’s not brain surgery but it’s definitely some worth while instruction ๐
Love the third one, Arley.
Thanks Andra, always happy to see you stopping by ๐
I love the third image too. it’s got that extra degree of sparkle. I wouldn’t have noticed the spot if you hadn’t mentioned it, but now it is sooooooooo obvious. I knew it wasn’t on my screen as I clean my screen fairly regularly (& my keyboard and my mouse and my camera lenses).
(Having said that, I’m sure there are spots that I miss).
Yeah, I thought about fixing it in Photoshop but I figured it would give me a good chance to remind us all of some of the simple rules ๐
It happens. You can go for ages with a clean sensor no matter how often you change a lens. Then out of the blue you have a run of invaders. Sometimes I think the more you clean the more you get the little pests!
Like the images.
๐ glad you liked them and thanks for stopping by
Love the shots. Thanks for the advice.
BE ENCOURAGED! BE BLESSED!
Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed ๐
Something similar happened to me about a year ago. I managed to get some amazing infra red shots up in the local mountains, only to find them all ruined with similar spots, except I think mine had even more of them.
Suffice to say it has never ever happened to me again…………..well only once more, and that was yesterday.
Oh the pain.
Dave
Haha, that is terrible. I can’t imagine how upset I would be after all that work. It’s good to have dumb things we can laugh about later though ๐
First, I want to thank you for mentioning me in your post. I’m appreciative. Your post made me think that we are, to an extent, all rookies. No matter how much we know or think we know, it takes even small reminders to show us our enthusiasm can get the best of us. Still, lessons are the source of reminders too. Yep, that’s great advice: to clean equipment before a shoot. How about the small piece of dust that occasionally will appears in the image? That’s a bear to clean from the lens or mirror. Great post, Sally
Thanks Sally, glad you stopped by ๐
Love your bean pod, Arley. We all need reminders of the ‘little’ things. They turn out to be not so little when the finished product emerges. Thanks!
I’m just thankful I got my “reminder” before my next client shoot.
Great shots. But as to the dust in the shot . . . oh yeah…been there, done that.
Thanks! and I think everyone has at least once
Wow – those shots are astounding!
Thank You, glad you liked them
I love backlight and I love these photos. Lovely! ๐
Thank You Inga, always a pleasure to hear from you ๐
LOVED the post. Made me smile at the end of a long monday! Thanks
Glad you liked it and I feel you on that long Monday
Very nice set of photos.
Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed them
Second shot is fave with me but I always go for the simple option and would take out the branch at the top not crop but remove in PS ๐ IMHO. I did not ‘spot’ your ‘spot’ but they are a pain when you get so enthused with what you are doing you miss them!
Susan
Thanks Susan, I might have to take a look at that when I do a revisited post with some old pictures. See you around!
Those black specks stand out like a sore thumb…
Made me read the whole post though!
๐
HAHA! I knew it would work ๐
